There is something about January that just beckons for new. Maybe it's the fact that the house seems so bare & fresh. Maybe it's that you've been around your family & you realize that something has to change. {just joking . . . } Maybe it's that in the last month you have eaten your entire body weight in finger foods, desserts & Christmas cookies. Whatever the reason, change & new are good things. They often bring better - a goodness that we didn't even know was missing.
For us, a big change that we are embarking on is that of the way & what we eat. We're not diving into some dead end dieting plan or the the whole 'organic, wheat grass, tofu' movement- for us, it's about being aware of what we are eating & what we are feeding our children. Simply put, most of the 'food' that we all eat isn't really food at all. It's very surprising to read exactly what is in the items we purchase at the grocery. Shocking, really. We're out to get back to the basics of nutrition.
With the help of my new bff, we have already began this adventure & it has been so good for our family. The coolest part for me is that last week, when I went to the store, I bought all we would need for meals, snacks, etc {and probably spent more $ than I should have} but then on Monday morning, we got 8 inches of snow {and where we live, that's enough to stop the world in motion!} and were stuck home for 3 days straight. And you know what . . . we had plenty of food. Good food. Real food. We still have so much leftover.
For me, beyond the healthy benefits of this, it's showing me that when we are aware of where we are putting our money for food, it seems that the Lord has stretched it & made it last. Does that make any sense?
This of course, by no means, means that we won't still eat out or eat processed food occasionally or that I won't let my kids enjoy candy & sugary stuff. It means it will be in moderation. It will be a privilege instead of an expectation.
I've already started some reorganizing in our kitchen & home {I hope to extend this past the food & into the way we clean & do day to day life as well} to help better equip us for this change. You know me, I don't pass up an opportunity to organize anything! I'll be sharing {pictures} about that stuff very soon!
