design on a dime . . .

Back in the winter, once we had found a new house, I got on this decorating high. Now, this can be a good & a bad thing. Bad: in that I was am driving my husband crazy & it really has become a form of coveting & idolizing for me- which I am really ashamed to admit and I'm really working on. But, on the good side, my family has a nice home. A home that we love to be in. As my birthday is approaching {this Saturday for those who care!} I got to thinking about using some of my birthday $ to finally finish our living room.

I looked around the other night and started thinking about all the "stuff" in our home that I have used to decorate that has literally cost me nothing! I'm not exaggerating in the slightest here. I love reading dyi decorating blogs, but sometimes I feel like they aren't really that "cheap"- I mean doing a room for $1000 is not cheap to me! Now, a room for $100, that's more like it! Everything in the pictures below has cost me not one single penny! {post -move}

I was able to use what I had & make it work. Here's a little walk through . . .

The white plates & arch I got back in the fall. The plate in the middle is my grandmother's wedding set. She gives each granddaughter a plate when they get married. The frame is from the shed here at the new house. I've had that shelf for years & who doesn't have some extra Mason jars & flowers stuck in a closet somewhere??!

The chalkboard is by far one of my favorite things in our home. When we moved, my sweet friend, Angi gave us her old dinning table to use. I took the legs off of our old one and used some chalkboard paint that I already had. As you can see from the picture, I'm still whitewashing it {ran out of paint! See, I told you I hadn't spent any money - even if it means showing my unfinished project! :)}

The art station is pretty self explanatory. A piece of twine, a bucket from my neighbor {for the chalk} and some clothes pins . . . which did actually cost me 25cents at a yard sale. oops . . .

okay, so it's design on a quarter now.

Now the artwork, those masterpieces are priceless.

Here's some from the kitchen. That big, round, metal looking thing is a bottom of our old fire pit. Our new house has an actual fire pit {surrounded by stones & everything!) but my sister got me that fire pit & I hated not to use it . . . so there you go. My friend, Betsy came over the other day & thought it was a large biscuit bowl? or biscuit pan? I can't remember. Does anyone know what that is & does it really look like one? You know I just like it cause it looks old!

My Tennessee frame is one of my favorites too - for obvious reasons. Just Google imaged everything {which I do ALL the time} and printed.

Window art is by S & E. Just hung with some raffia & ribbon.

My cheese bowl was given to my parents when they got married. A coat of paint is your best friend sometimes.

Am I boring you yet??!!!

I just made this last week. I found this piece of wood in our back shed - leftovers from when they put the flooring down. I accidentally left it out & it got soaked, but in the end, I like how the water warped the coloring of the wood. The letters I printed from my computer, filled in white spots with a sharpie & spray adhered them to the wood.

Just a simple wreath for the front door. {which use to be black & actually matched the shutters, but for some reason, somebody thought it would be a good idea to paint it green??! That will definitely be fixed this summer!} Pillow to match. {my sweet neighbor gave me all of this fabric}

Already had frame & plants . . .

The living room & the girls rooms are soooo close to being done. I'm sooooo ready for them to be!

So, there you have it - a look into our cheaply decorated house. Literally. It may not be what everyone loves, but it's what we love. It's full of pieces about us and that to me is the most important factor in decorating.

Hope you enjoyed it . . .
